Mario Rivera started his managerial career in 2007 with the youth team of Spanish outfit Levanes. He then coached different local outfits before joining Celtic as a scout in 2010.

After spending a year there, Atletico Madrid hired him as a video analyst for its C side.

He then coached different Spanish sides before joining East Bengal as an assistant to Alexandro Menendez in 2018.

He was assistant to Menendez for 32 games in 2018-19 I-League season before he was asked to take over the reins.

In his seven games in charge of East Bengal, Rivera guided them to to a second-place finish in the I-League two seasons back. Rivera is a UEFA Pro Licence holder.
