Vasco, January 24: After their maiden victory this season against FC Goa, SC East Bengal's hopes of a winning streak were crushed by Hyderabad FC, as the Nizams won the crucial Hero Indian Super League tie 4-0, courtesy a hattrick from Bartholomew Ogbeche.
SC East Bengal had some changes to their starting XI, with Antonio Perosevic returning to the team after serving his 5-match ban. Striker Marcelo Ribeiro Dos Santos, who was signed by SC East Bengal in the winter transfer window, was named on the bench by coach Mario Rivera.
Hyderabad FC started the match on the front foot, attacking hard in search of the opening goal. Their relentless offence bore fruit soon, with Ogbeche scoring from a corner at the 20th-minute mark.
SC East Bengal started seeing more of the ball after conceding the goal and came close to equalizing in the 39th minute, when Semboi Haokip’s header from a corner was saved by Hyderabad FC goalkeeper Laximikanth Kattimani. The rebound fell to Perosevic's left foot, but the shot was cleared off the line by the Hyderabad defence.
Ogbeche doubled Hyderabad FC's lead at the 45th minute, followed barely a minute later by Aniket Yadav's second goal in Hyderabad FC colours. SCEB went into the break three goals down.
The Nizams maintained possession of the ball in the second half, making sure SCEB had no chance to make a comeback. Bartholomew Ogbeche completed his hattrick around the 75th-minute mark with a clinical finish from outside the box.
Marcelo, introduced in the second half, earned a penalty towards the dying minutes for the Red-&-Gold Brigade, but Franjo Prce’s spot-kick was saved by Kattimani, who claimed his second clean sheet of the tournament.
SC East Bengal next face arch-rivals ATK Mohun Bagan on January 29 at the Fatorda stadium. SCEB coach Mario Rivera will have a lot of wrinkles to iron out before the first Kolkata Derby of 2022.
