Vasco, December 7: FC Goa on Tuesday prevailed over SC East Bengal 4-3 in a dramatic encounter at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Vasco.
SC East Bengal toiled hard in the field to come from behind thrice, only to see Noguera score his second goal of the match, dashing all SCEB hopes.
FC Goa started the game on the front foot, keeping most of the possession in the opening minutes.
SC East Bengal, coming on the back of a clean sheet against Chennaiyan FC, were content to keep its defensive shape, thwarting any attempt by the local team to come in-field.
The first blood of the match was drawn in the 14th minute when Noguera received the ball outside the box and unleashed a thunderous shot which found its way into the net before SCEB goalkeeper Suvam Sen could even react.
SC East Bengal took the attack to the opposition immediately after conceding the goal and were rewarded almost instantly. Awarded a free kick just outside the box at the 26th-minute mark, Dervisevic’s left-footed shot hit the wall and ricocheted back to Perosevic. The Croatian took the first-time attempt with his left-foot, which crashed against the post and ricocheted past the goal line, reducing the FC Goa goalkeeper to a mere spectator.
Just as SCEB looked to get a grip into the game, a foul by Sourav Das inside the box resulted in a penalty being awarded to FC Goa. Ortiz stepped up to take the spot kick. The Spaniard slotted the ball to his right, making Suvam Sen jump to the left and taking Goa up 2-1.
SC East Bengal pulled themselves up once again and five minutes later, a free-kick from Dervisevic fooled everyone including goalkeeper Dheeraj to land on the back of the net.
The team from the city of joy looked well on course to finish the half with a 2-2 scoreline, but FC Goa had other plans. Just at the stroke of half-time, a corner by FC Goa took a deflection of Perosevic and rolled over to the back of the net, giving Suvam Sen no chance.
SCEB, having gone behind thrice, came with renewed vigour in the second half. Pouncing on a missed pass by Glan Martins, Perosevic restored parity for the third time, beating an incoming Dheeraj Singh with a chip.
SCEB even had a chance to go ahead for the first time in the match courtesy of a quick counter-attack. Nigerian Chima, who came in in the 2nd half, was just a tap in away from putting SCEB forward, but Ivan Gonzalez came to Goa’s rescue and cleared the ball.
In the 80th minute, FC Goa launched a counter-attack. The move ended with a low-cross finding an unmarked Noguera who made no mistake to score his second of the match and put the game to bed.
With the score at 3-4, Goa ran the clock out to pull themselves out of the bottom slot on the league tables. SCEB will have to regain their momentum in the next match against Kerala Blasters FC and convert their goals into wins.
